How to Make a Road Pop Out from a Phone Using GIMP

Enhancing images by making elements pop out can create a striking visual effect. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making a road appear as if it's coming out of a phone using GIMP:

Step 1: Prepare Your Image

  1. Open Your Image: Load the image of the phone where you want the road to pop out.
  2. Zoom In: Press the + key on your keyboard to zoom in for detailed editing.

Step 2: Remove the Inside of the Phone

  1. Select the Path Tool: Press B to activate the Path Tool.
  2. Trace the Borders: Carefully trace around the phone’s screen, including over any fingers or other elements.
  3. Complete the Path: Link the last point of your path with the first by holding Ctrl and clicking on the starting point. Press Enter to finalize the selection.
  4. Add Alpha Channel: Right-click on the image layer and select Add Alpha Channel to enable transparency.
  5. Delete the Selection: Press the Delete key to remove the selected area.
  6. Deselect the Path: Select another tool and go to Select > None to remove the selection.

Step 3: Add and Position the Road Image

  1. Import the Road Image: Drag the road image into GIMP.
  2. Adjust Opacity: Lower the opacity of the road layer so you can see the phone image beneath it.
  3. Scale the Road: Use the Scale Tool (Shift+T) to resize the road so it fits inside the phone screen. Hold Ctrl while scaling to maintain proportions. Position it as needed.

Step 4: Finalize the Road Layer

  1. Increase Opacity: Set the opacity of the road layer back to 100%.
  2. Duplicate the Road Layer: Right-click on the road layer and select Duplicate Layer.
  3. Layer Order: Place one road layer under the phone layer and the other on top of it.

Step 5: Mask the Top Road Layer

  1. Create a Selection: Use the Path Tool to trace around the road visible through the phone screen.
  2. Convert Path to Selection: Right-click on the top road layer, select Add Layer Mask, and then Initialize Layer Mask to Selection.
  3. Apply Layer Mask: Click Add to apply the mask.

Step 6: Add Shadows and Adjust the Road

  1. Create a New Layer: Click on the New Layer icon and select Transparency.
  2. Position the New Layer: Move this layer below the top road layer with the mask.
  3. Select the Brush Tool: Use a soft brush with low hardness and opacity (around 14%).
  4. Paint Shadows: On the new layer, paint with black to add shadows and enhance the effect of the road popping out.

Step 7: Final Adjustments

  1. Adjust Layer Mask: Switch to the layer mask and paint with white to reveal any hidden parts of the road.
  2. Finalize the Image: Right-click on the layers and select New from Visible to create a combined view.

Step 8: Add Color Adjustments

  1. Open Color Curves: Go to Colors > Curves.
  2. Adjust Colors: Select the Blue and Red channels and adjust the curves to enhance the overall color of the image. Click OK to apply.
