How to Create a Glassmorphism Effect in GIMP

Glassmorphism is a popular design trend characterized by a frosted glass-like effect that adds a modern and sleek touch to your images. In this tutorial, we'll walk you through the steps to create a glassmorphism effect in GIMP.

Step 1: Duplicate the Layer

Start by duplicating the layer of the image you want to apply the effect to. This ensures that your original image remains untouched as you work on the effect.

Step 2: Apply Gaussian Blur

Go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Adjust the blur until you're satisfied with the level of softness. This blurred layer will serve as the frosted glass effect in your design.

Step 3: Create a Rounded Rectangle Selection

Select the Rectangle Select Tool and adjust the settings to have rounded corners. Set the radius to 55 and draw a rectangle over the area where you want the glassmorphism effect to appear.

Step 4: Add a Layer Mask

With the blurred layer selected, right-click and choose Add Layer Mask. Use the selection layer mask option to apply the mask. This will make the selected area visible while keeping the rest of the image untouched.

Step 5: Stylize the Blurred Layer

To give your effect more depth, go to Filters > Decor > Bevel. Uncheck Work on copy and adjust the thickness to 5. This adds a subtle bevel effect around the edges.

Step 6: Add Drop Shadows

Duplicate the blurred layer. On the bottom layer, go to Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow. Adjust the opacity and position to create a soft shadow effect. Then, add an inner shadow to the top layer for more depth by using the Drop Shadow Legacy filter.

Step 7: Final Touches

After adding shadows, right-click and select New from Visible to finalize your design. Adjust any settings to perfect your glassmorphism effect.
