How to Add a Watermark to an Image in GIMP

Adding a watermark to your images is a great way to protect your work and brand your content. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the steps to add a watermark to an image using GIMP.

Step 1: Create a New Layer

First, create a new transparent layer by clicking on the new layer icon and selecting "Transparency" as the fill option. Click "OK" to add the layer.

Step 2: Add Lines to the Watermark

Use the Paths Tool to create diagonal lines across the new layer. Click to set points from the top left to the bottom right edge, then go to Edit > Stroke Path. Choose a solid color, enable anti-aliasing, set the line width to 1 pixel, and apply the stroke.

Step 3: Duplicate and Move Lines

Duplicate the line layer by clicking the duplicate icon. Use the Move Tool to position the new lines as desired. Repeat this process to add more lines, adjusting their positions for a pattern effect.

Step 4: Merge Layers

Once you’re satisfied with the line arrangement, merge the line layers. Click the merge icon twice to combine all line layers into a single layer.

Step 5: Flip the Lines

Duplicate the merged line layer again. Use the Flip Tool with the horizontal direction checked to flip the lines, creating a more complex watermark design.

Step 6: Add Text

Create a new text layer by selecting the Text Tool. Choose a light color for the text (e.g., HTML notation E6E6E6). Type your desired watermark text. Adjust the text size to fit your image by selecting and changing the font size to 70 or 80 pixels.

Step 7: Convert Text to Brush

Right-click on the text layer and choose Alpha to Selection. Press Ctrl + C to copy the text as a brush. Deselect the selection by going to Select > None and delete the text layer.

Step 8: Apply the Watermark

Create another transparent layer. Select the Brush Tool, choose the copied text brush from the clipboard, and click to apply the watermark to the new layer. Adjust the opacity to your liking.

Step 9: Finalize the Watermark

Merge the watermark layer with the image layer to apply the watermark. Click the merge icon to finalize the process.
