How to Create a Glass Sphere Effect in GIMP
In this tutorial, we’ll walk through the steps to create a stunning glass sphere effect in GIMP. Follow along to add this eye-catching effect to your design projects.
Step 1: Set Up Your Workspace
- Select the Ellipse Selection Tool: Start by selecting the
Ellipse Selection Tool
from the toolbox. - Check Options: Ensure that
Expand from Center
andFixed Aspect Ratio
options are checked. - Create the Circle: Click and drag to create a perfect circle on your canvas. Press
Enter
to confirm the selection. - Create a New Transparent Layer: Go to
Layer > New from Visible
to create a new layer, fill it with transparency, and pressOK
. - Fill the Selection with Black: Use the
Bucket Fill Tool
to fill the selected circle with black. - Deselect: Go to

Step 2: Duplicate and Adjust the Background Layer
- Duplicate the Background Layer: Right-click the background layer and select

to flip the duplicate layer horizontally and vertically. - Adjust Position: Use the
Move Tool
to position the flipped shadow layer under the sphere.
Step 7: Final Adjustments
- Invert Colors: If needed, invert the colors of the duplicated shadow layer by going to
Colors > Invert
. - Apply Gaussian Blur: Add a slight blur to the shadow layer using
Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur
. - Merge Layers: Merge the layers to finalize the glass sphere effect.
Step 8: Add a Ground Shadow
- Create a New Layer: Add a new transparent layer under the sphere.
- Use the Paintbrush Tool: Set the foreground color to black and increase the brush size. Click multiple times to add a shadow.
