How to Create a 3D Bend Text Effect in GIMP
Creating unique text effects in GIMP can add a professional touch to your projects. Today, we’ll walk through the steps to create a striking 3D bend text effect, perfect for banners, posters, or any other creative work.
Step 1: Set Up Your Workspace
- Create a New Image: Go to
File > New
and set the image width to 1920 and the height to 1080 pixels. Click OK. - Zoom Out: Press the minus key (
-
) on your keyboard to zoom out. - Add Guides:
- Go to
Image > Guides > New Guide (by Percent)
and set the direction toHorizontal
at 50%. Press OK. - Repeat the process for a
Vertical
guide at 50%.

Step 2: Create the Background Gradient
- Select the Gradient Tool: Choose the gradient tool and set the foreground color to a light gray (
#CCC8C8
). - Set Gradient Settings: Ensure the gradient type is set to
FG to BG
(foreground to background) and the shape toRadial
. - Apply the Gradient: Click in the center of your image and drag outward to create the gradient. Press
Enter
to confirm.
Step 3: Add and Format the Text
- Select the Text Tool: Change the foreground color to black, then choose the
Impact Condensed
font. - Add Your Text: Click anywhere on the canvas to create a text box. Type your text in all caps, adjust the size to 600 pixels, and center it horizontally and vertically using the alignment tool.
Step 4: Split the Text into Upper and Lower Sections
- Select the Rectangle Tool: With guides still active, select the upper part of the text using the rectangle tool.
- Copy and Paste: Copy the selection (
Ctrl + C
), then paste it (Ctrl + V
) to create a new floating selection. Anchor it to a new layer namedUpper
. - Repeat for the Bottom Half: Follow the same steps to create a new layer named
Bottom
.
Step 5: Apply Perspective and Scale Adjustments
- Apply Perspective Tool: Select the
Perspective Tool
and apply it to theUpper
layer. Adjust the handles to match your guides, then repeat the process for theBottom
layer. - Scale the Layers: Use the
Scale Tool
to adjust the size of both the upper and bottom text layers, holdingShift
to maintain proportions.
Step 6: Add Images Inside the Text Layers
- Insert an Image: Drag an image layer beneath the
Bottom
text layer and scale it to cover the text. UseAlpha to Selection
on the text layer, then add a layer mask to the image, ensuring it only fills the text area. - Repeat for the Upper Layer: Follow the same steps for the
Upper
text layer.
Step 7: Final Adjustments
- Align the Layers: Ensure both the
Upper
andBottom
layers are properly aligned. - Add a Shadow: Go to
Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow
to add depth to the text effect. - Finalize: Merge visible layers to complete the effect.
