How to Create a 3D Bend Text Effect in GIMP

Creating unique text effects in GIMP can add a professional touch to your projects. Today, we’ll walk through the steps to create a striking 3D bend text effect, perfect for banners, posters, or any other creative work.

Step 1: Set Up Your Workspace

  • Create a New Image: Go to File > New and set the image width to 1920 and the height to 1080 pixels. Click OK.
  • Zoom Out: Press the minus key (-) on your keyboard to zoom out.
  • Add Guides:
    • Go to Image > Guides > New Guide (by Percent) and set the direction to Horizontal at 50%. Press OK.
    • Repeat the process for a Vertical guide at 50%.

Step 2: Create the Background Gradient

  • Select the Gradient Tool: Choose the gradient tool and set the foreground color to a light gray (#CCC8C8).
  • Set Gradient Settings: Ensure the gradient type is set to FG to BG (foreground to background) and the shape to Radial.
  • Apply the Gradient: Click in the center of your image and drag outward to create the gradient. Press Enter to confirm.

Step 3: Add and Format the Text

  • Select the Text Tool: Change the foreground color to black, then choose the Impact Condensed font.
  • Add Your Text: Click anywhere on the canvas to create a text box. Type your text in all caps, adjust the size to 600 pixels, and center it horizontally and vertically using the alignment tool.

Step 4: Split the Text into Upper and Lower Sections

  • Select the Rectangle Tool: With guides still active, select the upper part of the text using the rectangle tool.
  • Copy and Paste: Copy the selection (Ctrl + C), then paste it (Ctrl + V) to create a new floating selection. Anchor it to a new layer named Upper.
  • Repeat for the Bottom Half: Follow the same steps to create a new layer named Bottom.

Step 5: Apply Perspective and Scale Adjustments

  • Apply Perspective Tool: Select the Perspective Tool and apply it to the Upper layer. Adjust the handles to match your guides, then repeat the process for the Bottom layer.
  • Scale the Layers: Use the Scale Tool to adjust the size of both the upper and bottom text layers, holding Shift to maintain proportions.

Step 6: Add Images Inside the Text Layers

  • Insert an Image: Drag an image layer beneath the Bottom text layer and scale it to cover the text. Use Alpha to Selection on the text layer, then add a layer mask to the image, ensuring it only fills the text area.
  • Repeat for the Upper Layer: Follow the same steps for the Upper text layer.

Step 7: Final Adjustments

  • Align the Layers: Ensure both the Upper and Bottom layers are properly aligned.
  • Add a Shadow: Go to Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow to add depth to the text effect.
  • Finalize: Merge visible layers to complete the effect.
