How to Create a Double Exposure Text Effect in GIMP

The double exposure text effect combines text with images for a striking visual impact. Follow this step-by-step guide to create it in GIMP:

Step 1: Create a New Image

  1. Open a New Document: Go to File > New. Set the image width to 1920 pixels and height to 1080 pixels. Click OK.
  2. Zoom Out: Press the - key on your keyboard to zoom out.

Step 2: Add and Format Text

  1. Set Foreground Color: Ensure your foreground color is black.
  2. Add Text: Select the Text Tool (T) and click on the canvas to create a text box. Type your text (e.g., "DOUBLE").
  3. Format Text: Use the font Poppins Bold with a size of 1200. Adjust alignment to center the text both horizontally and vertically.

Step 3: Prepare the Image for Double Exposure

  1. Import and Convert Image: Import the image you want to use for the double exposure effect. Convert it to black and white: Go to Colors > Desaturate, and move the scale slider all the way down. Click OK.
  2. Adjust Contrast: Go to Colors > Curves. Darken dark pixels and widen white pixels by adjusting the curve. Click OK.
  3. Remove White Background: Go to Layer > Transparency > Color to Alpha to remove the white background. Hide the white background if needed.

Step 4: Position and Mask the Image

  1. Scale the Image: Use the Scale Tool to resize the image. Hold down the Ctrl key while scaling to maintain proportions. Position the image to align with the text.
  2. Add Layer Mask: Right-click on the image layer and select Add Layer Mask. Choose Selection for the mask. This will hide parts of the image outside the text.
  3. Apply Layer Mask: Right-click on the image layer again and select Apply Layer Mask.

Step 5: Add and Adjust a Secondary Image

  1. Import and Convert a Secondary Image: Import another image (e.g., a woman's face). Convert this layer to black and white similarly: Colors > Desaturate.
  2. Position and Mask the Secondary Image: Reduce the opacity of this image layer, move it into the text area, and align it as desired. Add a layer mask as before and apply it.

Step 6: Final Adjustments

  1. Merge Layers: Merge the text and secondary image layers. Remove any unnecessary layers by clicking the X icon next to the layer.
  2. Change Background Color: Select the Gradient Tool, set the gradient to FG to BG RGB with Radial style, and apply it to the background. Choose a lighter gray for the foreground color.
  3. Adjust Contrast and Vignette: Go to Colors > Curves to adjust the contrast. Then, add a vignette effect: Filters > Light and Shadow > Vignette, and adjust to your liking.

Step 7: Finalize Your Image

  1. Resize and Save: Right-click on the image and select Layer to Image Size. Save your final image.
