How to Blur the Edges of an Image in GIMP

How to Blur the Edges of an Image in GIMP

Introduction

Blurring the edges of an image can create a soft, seamless transition between the image and its background. In this tutorial, we'll walk you through the steps to achieve this effect using GIMP, a powerful and free image editing tool.

Step 1: Open Your Image in GIMP

First, open GIMP and import the image you want to edit by going to File > Open. Once your image is loaded, you need to prepare it for editing by adding an Alpha Channel.

Step 2: Add an Alpha Channel

To add transparency to your image, right-click on the image layer in the Layers panel and select Add Alpha Channel. This will allow parts of the image to be transparent when you delete them.

Step 3: Add Guides

Guides will help you center your selection. Go to Image > Guides > New Guide by Percent and set the position to 50% with the orientation set to Horizontal. Click OK to add the guide. Repeat this process to add a Vertical guide at 50%.

Step 4: Create a Rectangle Selection

With your guides in place, select the Rectangle Select Tool from the toolbar. In the tool options, make sure Expand from Center is checked. Click at the intersection of the guides and drag outwards to create a square selection centered on your image. Press Enter to confirm the selection.

Step 5: Feather the Selection

Feathering will blur the edges of the selection. Go to Select > Feather and set the Feather Radius to 100 pixels. Ensure Select areas outside the image is checked, then click OK.

Step 6: Invert the Selection and Delete

Now, invert the selection by going to Select > Invert. This will select the edges of your image. Press Delete on your keyboard to remove the selected area, leaving a blurred edge.

Step 7: Remove the Selection and Guides

To see the final result, remove the selection by going to Select > None. Remove the guides by going to Image > Guides > Remove all Guides.

Step 8: Add a Background (Optional)

If you want to add a background, create a new layer by going to Layer > New from Visible and fill it with the color of your choice. Place this layer beneath your image layer.
