How to Create a Face Stretch Effect in GIMP
In this tutorial, we will learn how to create a face stretch effect using GIMP, a versatile and powerful free graphic design software. This effect can add a creative twist to your images, giving them a distorted and surreal look. Follow the steps below to achieve this effect, and don’t forget to check out our YouTube video for a visual guide.
Step 1: Preparing Your Image
First, open your image in GIMP. Once your image is open, right-click on the image layer and select "Add Alpha Channel". This will allow us to work with transparency, which is crucial for this effect.
Step 2: Duplicating and Hiding Layers
Next, we need to duplicate the layer. Left-click on the duplicate icon to create a copy of the image layer. Now, hide the original layer by clicking on the eye icon next to it. We will work on the duplicated layer to create the face stretch effect.
Step 3: Removing the Background
To remove the background, select the "Select by Color Tool" and click on the background of your image. Adjust the threshold by dragging to the right until you’ve selected the entire background. You might need to use the "Free Select Tool" to manually trace and add any missed areas. Once satisfied, press the minus key to zoom out.
Step 4: Adding a Layer Mask
Now, right-click on the image layer and choose "Add Layer Mask." Make sure to select "Selection" as the mask source. Since the background is selected, the person in the image might disappear. To fix this, invert the mask so that the person remains visible while the background becomes transparent.
Step 5: Refining the Mask
After adding the mask, you might notice that parts of the person are missing. To correct this, deselect everything by going to Select > None. Then, choose the "Paintbrush Tool," set the foreground color to white, and paint over the areas where the person was accidentally removed. This will restore those parts of the image.
Step 6: Creating the Face Stretch Effect
Now, we’re ready to create the stretch effect. Hide the layer with the transparent background and right-click on the visible layer. Select "New from Visible" to create a new layer with the current content.
Next, use the "Ellipse Select Tool" to draw a selection around the face. Press Ctrl + C to copy the selection to the clipboard.
Step 7: Applying the Stretch
Select the "Paintbrush Tool" again, and change the brush to the one from the clipboard (the face selection you just copied). Make sure the spacing is set to zero for a smooth effect. Remove the selection by going to Select > None.
Now, use the "Path Tool" to create a curved path that you want the face stretch to follow. Once your path is set, create a new transparent layer, and stroke the path using the paintbrush. This will create the stretched effect.
Step 8: Final Adjustments
After applying the stretch, you might want to erase parts of the stretched face that overlap with other parts of the body. Use the "Eraser Tool" to remove the unnecessary parts.
To complete the effect, you can merge the layers by creating a new visible layer. You can then add any background or other elements to finalize your design.
