How to Color Grade Images in GIMP

How to Color Grade Images in GIMP

Hi! Today, we’ll explore how to color grade images using GIMP. I’ll demonstrate with two images: the first and the second. You can find the links to these images in the description box.

Step 1: Prepare Your Image

Start by opening your first image in GIMP. Select the Gradient Tool from the toolbox. Ensure the gradient is set to "FG to BG" (Foreground to Background) and the shape is set to "Linear."

Step 2: Duplicate the Layer

Duplicate the image layer by clicking the icon to create a new layer. This will allow us to work non-destructively.

Step 3: Set Gradient Colors

Click on the Foreground Color box and choose a dark shade of blue. Press OK. Then, click on the Background Color box and select a lighter shade of blue. Press OK again.

Step 4: Apply Gradient Map

With your new layer selected, go to Colors > Map > Gradient Map. This applies the gradient to the layer.

Step 5: Adjust Layer Mode

Change the layer mode to "Overlay" for a blending effect. You can also adjust the opacity to fine-tune the color grading to your liking.

Step 6: Repeat for Second Image

Repeat the above steps with your second image. This time, choose a dark orange for the foreground and a light yellow for the background.

Step 7: Apply Gradient Map and Adjust

Go to Colors > Map > Gradient Map, set the layer mode to "Overlay," and adjust the opacity if needed.

Step 8: Review and Compare

Click on the eye icon next to your layers to compare the before and after effects. This will help you see the impact of your color grading.

Step 9: Finalize

Once you’re satisfied with the color grading, save your image. You can use the same technique on multiple images to achieve consistent results.
