How to Extend the Background of Images in Photopea

Hi! Today, we’ll learn how to extend the background of images using Photopea. Follow these steps to modify and expand your image background effectively.

Step 1: Resize the Image

Start by resizing your image. Since the filter works best on smaller images, reduce the size from 3,000 pixels to a more manageable size. Go to Image > Image Size. Unlink the width and height by clicking the chain icon, then divide both dimensions by four. Click OK to apply the changes.

Step 2: Zoom and Center the Image

Use the Zoom Tool to zoom in on your image. Select the Hand Tool to position the image in the center of the canvas. Duplicate the layer by right-clicking and choosing Duplicate Layer for a before-and-after comparison. Hide the bottom layer for now.

Step 3: Scale Down the Image

Select the top layer and use the Move Tool with Transform Controls enabled to scale down the image. Center it on the canvas.

Step 4: Select the Transparent Area

Use the Magic Wand Tool to select the transparent areas around the image. With the area selected, go to Edit > Fill and choose Content-Aware Fill or Magic Replace to generate the background. You might need to watch an ad or subscribe for best results.

Step 5: Refine the Background

If the result isn’t perfect, retry the Magic Replace tool until you achieve a satisfactory outcome. Deselect the selection by going to Select > Deselect.

Step 6: Fix Minor Issues

Zoom in to identify and fix any imperfections. Use the Spot Healing Brush Tool to correct areas with noticeable discrepancies. Adjust the brush size and hardness as needed to blend the fixes seamlessly.

Step 7: Final Review

Zoom out to review the extended background. Make additional adjustments if necessary, using the Magic Replace tool to fine-tune the background.

Step 8: Save Your Work

Once satisfied with the extended background, save your image. Export it in the desired format for your needs.
