How to Combine Two Images in GIMP
Combining two images into one is a powerful technique in graphic design, allowing you to create stunning visuals by merging different elements. In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through the process of combining two images in GIMP, resulting in a seamless blend that can be used for creative projects or photo manipulations.
Step 1: Import the Second Image
- Start by opening your primary image in GIMP.
- Next, bring in the second image that you want to combine with the first. In this example, we’re using an image of mountains.
- Once the second image is imported, convert it to the appropriate format if necessary.
- Move the second image layer underneath the first image layer (in this case, the layer with the woman).
Step 2: Add a Layer Mask
To blend the two images together, we need to add a layer mask to the top layer (the woman layer in this example).
Right-click on the woman layer in the Layers panel and select
Add Layer Mask
.In the pop-up window, choose
White (full opacity)
and clickAdd
.- In a layer mask, black represents transparency, while white represents opacity. We will use this feature to reveal the mountains beneath the woman layer.
Step 3: Apply a Gradient to the Layer Mask
- Select the
Gradient Tool
from the toolbar (shortcut:G
). - Change the gradient style to
FG to BG (RGB)
where the foreground color is black and the background color is white. - Make sure the layer mask is selected (it will have a white outline in the Layers panel).
- Click and drag the gradient across the image from the left side where you want the woman to fade into the mountains.
- Adjust the gradient to achieve the desired blend. You can zoom in and refine the gradient by dragging the control points.
Step 4: Merge the Layers
Once you’re satisfied with the blend, merge the two layers together by clicking on the
Merge Down
icon in the Layers panel.- This final step will combine the two images into one seamless image.
- This final step will combine the two images into one seamless image.
