How to Convert Images to Outlines in GIMP

In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the process of converting images to outlines using GIMP. This technique is useful for creating clear, crisp outlines from your images, ideal for graphic design and artistic projects. Follow these steps to achieve the best results.

Step 1: Prepare Your Image

Ensure the image you’re using has a black outline around it. This method works best with images that have distinct outlines.

Step 2: Increase Canvas Size

Go to Image > Canvas Size. Click on the Chain icon to link the width and height. Increase both dimensions by 10% by entering 10 and pressing Enter. Center the layer on the canvas and resize accordingly.

Step 3: Create and Fill a New Transparent Layer

Create a new transparent layer by clicking on the New Layer icon. Fill it with transparency and place it below the cartoon layer. Fill the transparent layer with white by dragging the foreground color.

Step 4: Merge Layers

Merge the two layers by clicking on the top layer and selecting the Merge Down icon. This combines the layers into one.

Step 5: Duplicate and Desaturate the Layer

Duplicate the merged layer to compare before and after effects. Go to Colors > Desaturate and choose the mode that gives the lightest colors, such as Luminous.

Step 6: Adjust Layer Mode

Duplicate the desaturated layer and change the layer mode to Dodge. This will remove most of the gray colors.

Step 7: Remove Gray Colors

Duplicate the dodged layer again and create a new layer from visible by right-clicking and selecting New from Visible. Delete the previous layers with gray colors.

Step 8: Convert to Black and White

If there are any remaining gray areas, convert them to black by going to Colors > Threshold. This will turn all colors into black and white.

Step 9: Sharpen the Outlines

Zoom in by pressing the Plus key. Apply a slight blur by going to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Use a blur radius of 2.5 to avoid excessive blurring. Click OK to apply.

Step 10: Enhance with Curves

Go to Colors > Curves. Drag the white slider to the left and the black slider to the right to increase contrast and sharpen the outlines. Adjust until you achieve the desired effect.
