How to Rotate Objects Around the Center in GIMP

How to Rotate Objects Around the Center in GIMP

Rotating objects around a central point in GIMP is a useful technique for creating symmetrical designs and precise layouts. This guide will show you how to rotate objects evenly around the center of your canvas.

Step 1: Create a New Image

Start by creating a new image in GIMP:

  1. Go to File > New.
  2. Set the image width to 1920 pixels and height to 1080 pixels.
  3. Click OK to create the new image.

To better visualize your work, zoom out by pressing the - key on your keyboard.

Step 2: Change the Background Color

Next, change the background color:

  1. Click on the foreground color in the toolbox.
  2. Enter the HTML notation for the desired color (e.g., #efb3d0) and press OK.
  3. Drag the color onto the canvas to fill the background.

Step 3: Add Guides to the Image

Guides help you align objects precisely:

  1. Go to Image > Guides > New Guide by Percent.
  2. Set the direction to Horizontal and position to 50%, then press OK.
  3. Repeat the process for a vertical guide at 50%.

Step 4: Import and Scale the Image

Import the object you want to rotate:

  1. Drag the image from your folder into GIMP.
  2. Use the Scale Tool to resize the image. Divide the width and height by 5 for a proportional scale.
  3. Click Scale to apply the changes.

Step 5: Center the Object

To place the object in the center:

  1. Select the Move Tool.
  2. Move the object towards the center. It should snap to the guides if View > Snap to Guides is enabled.

Step 6: Duplicate and Rotate the Object

Now, duplicate and rotate the object:

  1. Click the Duplicate Layer icon to create a copy of the layer.
  2. Select the Rotate Tool and left-click on the object.
  3. Move the rotation center (a small circle) to the intersection of the guides.
  4. Enter 45 degrees in the angle field and press Enter.
  5. Click Rotate to apply the rotation.

For additional rotations:

  1. Duplicate the rotated layer.
  2. Rotate the new layer by the next angle increment (e.g., 90°, 135°, 180°, 225°).
  3. Always adjust the center point before rotating.

Step 7: Final Adjustments

After rotating all objects:

  1. Select the central object and use the Scale Tool to adjust its size proportionally by holding the Ctrl key.
  2. Remove the guides by going to Image > Guides > Remove All Guides.

You can also change the background color or add additional effects to enhance your design.

Step 8: Merge and Save

Once you are satisfied with the layout:

  1. Right-click the top layer and select New from Visible to merge all visible layers.
  2. Save or export your final image.
