How to Rotate Objects Around the Center in GIMP
Rotating objects around a central point in GIMP is a useful technique for creating symmetrical designs and precise layouts. This guide will show you how to rotate objects evenly around the center of your canvas.
Step 1: Create a New Image
Start by creating a new image in GIMP:
- Go to
File
>New
. - Set the image width to 1920 pixels and height to 1080 pixels.

To better visualize your work, zoom out by pressing the -
key on your keyboard.
Step 2: Change the Background Color
Next, change the background color:
- Click on the foreground color in the toolbox.
- Enter the HTML notation for the desired color (e.g.,

. - Drag the color onto the canvas to fill the background.
Step 3: Add Guides to the Image
Guides help you align objects precisely:
- Go to
Image
>Guides
>New Guide by Percent
. - Set the direction to
Horizontal
and position to50%
, then pressOK
. - Repeat the process for a vertical guide at
50%
.
Step 4: Import and Scale the Image
Import the object you want to rotate:
- Drag the image from your folder into GIMP.
- Use the
Scale Tool
to resize the image. Divide the width and height by 5 for a proportional scale. - Click
Scale
to apply the changes.
Step 5: Center the Object
To place the object in the center:
- Select the
Move Tool
. - Move the object towards the center. It should snap to the guides if
View
>Snap to Guides
is enabled.
Step 6: Duplicate and Rotate the Object
Now, duplicate and rotate the object:
- Click the
Duplicate Layer
icon to create a copy of the layer. - Select the
Rotate Tool
and left-click on the object. - Move the rotation center (a small circle) to the intersection of the guides.
- Enter
45
degrees in the angle field and pressEnter
. - Click
Rotate
to apply the rotation.
For additional rotations:
- Duplicate the rotated layer.
- Rotate the new layer by the next angle increment (e.g., 90°, 135°, 180°, 225°).
- Always adjust the center point before rotating.
Step 7: Final Adjustments
After rotating all objects:
- Select the central object and use the
Scale Tool
to adjust its size proportionally by holding theCtrl
key. - Remove the guides by going to
Image
>Guides
>Remove All Guides
.
You can also change the background color or add additional effects to enhance your design.
Step 8: Merge and Save
