Creating a Face-Hand Composite Effect in GIMP
In this tutorial, we’ll demonstrate how to create a face-hand composite effect using GIMP. This technique blends a face with a hand to create a unique visual effect.
Step 1: Create a New Image
- Open GIMP and go to
File
>New
. Set the image width to 1920 pixels and the height to 1080 pixels. ClickOK

Step 2: Set Up the Background
- Change the background color by selecting a color of your choice. Enter the HTML notation for the color and click

. - Choose the Gradient Tool, set the gradient to "FG to BG (RGB)", and the shape to "Radial". Apply the gradient from the center of the canvas.
Step 3: Prepare the Hand Image
- Import the hand image by dragging it into GIMP.
- Rotate the hand image by going to
Layer
>Transform
>Rotate 90° Clockwise
. - Flip the hand image vertically using the Flip Tool.
- Adjust the rotation of the hand to align it properly.
Step 4: Remove the Background from the Hand Image
- Ensure the hand layer has an alpha channel by right-clicking on it and selecting "Add Alpha Channel".

Step 5: Add the Face Image
- Drag the face image into the canvas and position it above the hand layer.
- Reduce the opacity of the face layer to see the hand layer underneath.
- Scale the face image down using the Scale Tool. Hold the

key to scale proportionally.
Step 6: Mask the Face Layer
- Right-click on the face layer and select "Add Layer Mask". Choose "Black (full transparency)" and click
Add
. - Use the Paintbrush Tool to paint with white on the mask to reveal parts of the face. Adjust the hardness and size of the brush as needed.
- Switch to black to hide unwanted areas. Fine-tune the blending between the face and hand.
Step 7: Blend the Colors
- Adjust the colors to match the hand and face. Go to
Colors
>Hue-Saturation
to adjust the hue and saturation. - For further blending, adjust the brightness and contrast of both layers.
Step 8: Add a Shadow Effect
- Create a new transparent layer for the shadow. Click the
New Layer
icon, select "Transparency", and clickOK
. - Set the foreground color to black. Use the Paintbrush Tool to add a shadow around the composite. Adjust the size and hardness of the brush as needed.
- Scale the shadow layer with the Scale Tool and adjust its opacity.
Step 9: Final Adjustments
- Merge the hand and face layers by selecting them and clicking the
Merge Down
icon. - Add final touches, such as color adjustments and shadows, to achieve the desired effect.
- Export your image in the desired format.
