How to Create a Rainbow Effect in GIMP

Creating a rainbow effect in GIMP can add a vibrant touch to your designs. Follow these steps to create a stunning rainbow effect:

Step 1: Set Up Your Document

  1. Create a New Transparent Layer:

    • Click on the New Layer icon.
    • Select Transparency and click OK.
  2. Configure the Brush Tool:

    • Select the Paintbrush Tool.
    • Set the size to 60, aspect ratio to 0, angle to 0, spacing to 10, hardness to 100, and force to 50.
    • Ensure Dynamics is set to Basic.

Step 2: Draw the Rainbow

  1. Select Colors:

    • Set your foreground color to red. Trace a red line with the brush tool while holding Ctrl and Shift keys to ensure a straight line.
    • Repeat for the following colors in order: orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. Use HTML color codes if necessary (e.g., #1A4EF5 for blue).
  2. Adjust the Rainbow:

    • Use the Rotation Tool to rotate the rainbow layer by typing 90 degrees in the angle box and pressing Enter.
    • Select the Flip Tool, set the direction to vertical, and click to flip the rainbow.
  3. Apply Polar Coordinates Filter:

    • Go to Filters > Distort > Polar Coordinates.
    • Leave the default settings and click OK.
    • If there is a small gap at the top, fix it by flipping the layer vertically and cropping the bottom part of the rainbow.

Step 3: Finalize the Rainbow Effect

  1. Scale and Position:

    • Use the Scale Tool to adjust the size and position of the rainbow as needed.
    • Crop the layer to its content and use the Ctrl key to scale it accurately.
  2. Blend and Erase:

    • Hide the rainbow layer temporarily and select the islands or areas where the rainbow will appear.
    • Show the rainbow layer and press the Delete key to remove any unnecessary parts.
    • Use the Eraser Tool to clean up any remaining parts of the rainbow.
  3. Adjust Layer Mode and Apply Blur:

    • Change the rainbow layer mode to Screen for better blending.
    • Go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur and adjust the blur to blend the colors smoothly.
  4. Final Touches:

    • Remove any excess rainbow using the Eraser Tool.
    • Adjust the opacity of the rainbow layer to achieve the desired brightness.
    • Merge the rainbow layer with the image layer.
    • Go to Colors > Curves to brighten the image further if needed.
