How to Create the Flipped Text Effect in GIMP

Creating a flipped text effect can add a dynamic and visually appealing touch to your designs. Follow these steps to achieve this effect in GIMP:

Step 1: Create a New Image

  1. Set Up Your Canvas:

    • Go to File > New.
    • Set the width to 1920 pixels and the height to 1080 pixels. Click OK.
  2. Adjust View:

    • Press the - key on your keyboard to zoom out.
  3. Set Background Color:

    • Ensure the background layer is black.
    • Set the foreground color to white for the text.

Step 2: Add Text

  1. Create Text:

    • Select the Text Tool (T) and click on the canvas to create a text box.
    • Type your text. For this example, use the font Montserrat Heavy with a size of 300 pixels and set the letter spacing to 10 pixels.
  2. Confirm Text:

    • Click on another tool or press Enter to finalize the text.
  3. Make Selection from Text:

    • Right-click on the text layer and choose Alpha to Selection.
  4. Create New Transparent Layer:

    • Click the New Layer icon and select Transparency. Click OK.
  5. Hide Original Text Layer:

    • Click the eye icon next to the text layer to hide it.

Step 3: Apply Gradient

  1. Select Gradient Tool:

    • Choose the Gradient Tool (G). Set the gradient to FG to BG (RGB).
  2. Apply Gradient:

    • Drag the gradient tool across the canvas to create a fading effect. Press Enter.
  3. Remove Selection:

    • Go to Select > None.

Step 4: Rotate and Duplicate Text

  1. Remove Text Layer:

    • Click the X icon to delete the text layer.
  2. Rotate Text Layer:

    • Select the layer with the text.
    • Go to Layer > Transform > Rotate 90° Counterclockwise.
  3. Move Layer:

    • Select the Move Tool (M) to position the rotated layer.
  4. Duplicate Layer:

    • Click the Duplicate Layer icon to create copies of the rotated text layer.

Step 5: Apply 3D Transform

  1. Apply 3D Transform:

    • Select the duplicated text layer.
    • Use the 3D Transform Tool to adjust the Y-axis by typing 20 and pressing Enter.
  2. Move Layer:

    • Use the Move Tool to position the transformed layer. Hold Ctrl to keep it aligned.
  3. Repeat Duplications:

    • Continue duplicating and applying the 3D Transform Tool to create multiple copies of the text layer, adjusting the Y-axis each time.
  4. Align Layers:

    • Use the Alignment Tool to align all text layers vertically if needed.

Step 6: Flip and Merge Layers

  1. Duplicate Layer Again:

    • Duplicate the merged layer containing all text copies.
  2. Flip Horizontally:

    • Select the Flip Tool (Shift + F) and set the direction to Horizontal. Click on the duplicated layer to flip it.
  3. Move and Align Flipped Layer:

    • Use the Move Tool and Alignment Tool to position and align the flipped text layer with the original layers.
  4. Merge Layers:

    • Merge down the flipped layer with the other layers to finalize the effect.

Step 7: Sharpen the Image

  1. Sharpen Image:

    • Zoom in by pressing the + key.
    • Go to Filters > Enhance > Sharpen (Unsharp Mask). Adjust settings to improve clarity.
  2. Preview and Apply:

    • Preview the sharpening effect. Click OK to apply.
  3. Zoom Out:

    • Press the - key to zoom out and view the final effect.
