How to Create a Paper Text Effect in GIMP

Creating a paper text effect can give your text a realistic, textured appearance. Follow these steps to achieve this effect in GIMP:

Step 1: Create a New Image

  1. Set Up Canvas:

    • Go to File > New.
    • Set the width to 1920 pixels and the height to 1080 pixels. Click OK.
  2. Adjust View:

    • Press the - key to zoom out.
  3. Set Background Color:

    • Select the Foreground Color box and enter the HTML notation #D3DB0D. Click OK.
  4. Apply Background Color:

    • Use the Bucket Fill Tool (Shift + B) to fill the canvas with the selected color.

Step 2: Add Text

  1. Change Foreground Color:

    • Click on the Foreground Color box again and enter the HTML notation #CBCECB. Click OK.
  2. Create Text:

    • Select the Text Tool (T) and click on the canvas to create a text box.
    • Type your text. Press Ctrl + A to select all text.
  3. Adjust Font:

    • Double-click the font name in the Text Tool options and choose Open Sans. Set the font size to 500 pixels.
  4. Align Text:

    • Select the Alignment Tool and click on the text layer. Align the text horizontally and vertically to the center of the image.

Step 3: Convert Text to Path

  1. Convert to Path:

    • Right-click on the text layer and select Text to Path.
  2. View Path:

    • Go to the Paths tab to see the red outline of the path.
  3. Hide Text Layer:

    • Hide the text layer to work with the path only.

Step 4: Create and Stroke Path

  1. Create New Transparent Layer:

    • Click the New Layer icon and choose Transparency. Click OK.
  2. Fill Path with Gray:

    • Make sure the foreground color is set to gray (#CBCECB).
    • Select the Paths Tool (B), then click on Edit > Fill Path. Check Anti-aliasing and click Fill.
  3. Create Stroke Path:

    • Create another new transparent layer and place it below the gray text layer.
    • Set the foreground color to white.
    • Select Edit > Stroke Path, choose Line Width of 70 pixels, and click Stroke.

Step 5: Add Black Shadow

  1. Merge Layers:

    • Select the gray and white text layers. Right-click and choose Merge Down to combine them.
  2. Create Black Shadow:

    • Create another new transparent layer and place it under the merged text.
    • Set the foreground and background colors to black and white, respectively.
    • Use the Bucket Fill Tool to fill the layer with black.
  3. Apply Curve Distortion:

    • Select the Black Shadow Layer.
    • Go to Filters > Distorts > Curve Bend. Adjust the upper and lower curve borders to distort the shadow and click OK.
  4. Blur Shadow:

    • Apply a slight Gaussian Blur to the black shadow layer: Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Adjust the blur radius to your preference.
  5. Adjust Opacity:

    • Reduce the opacity of the black shadow layer to blend it with the text.

Step 6: Final Touches

  1. Fill Gaps:

    • Select the top layer.
    • Use the Paintbrush Tool (P) with 100% hardness and force to fill any gaps. Set the foreground color to white and adjust the brush size as needed.
  2. Finalize Image:

    • Right-click and select Merge Visible Layers to finalize the effect.
