How to Intersect Shapes in GIMP

Intersecting shapes in GIMP can create unique and interesting design elements. In this tutorial, we’ll walk through the steps to intersect shapes, change colors, and apply different composite modes.

Step 1: Create a New Image

  1. Open GIMP and go to File > New.
  2. Set the image width to 1920 pixels and the height to 1080 pixels. Press OK.
  3. To zoom out, press the minus key on your keyboard.

Step 2: Change the Background Color

  1. Click on the foreground color box to bring up the color selector.
  2. Adjust the slider to select a gray color. Use the HTML notation #7F7F7F (gray) and press OK.
  3. Use the Bucket Fill Tool to drag the foreground color onto the canvas.

Step 3: Import and Scale an Image

  1. Import an image by going to File > Open and selecting your desired image.
  2. Once the image is loaded, it might be too large. Use the Scale Tool to resize the image by left-clicking the image layer.
  3. To maintain proportions, keep the chain icon linked and hold down the Ctrl key while scaling the image.

Step 4: Create a Selection and New Layer

  1. Right-click on the image layer and choose Alpha to Selection to create a selection of the image's shape.
  2. Hide the image layer and create a new transparent layer by clicking the new layer icon, selecting Transparency, and pressing OK.

Step 5: Apply a New Color to the Selection

  1. Change the foreground color to red with the HTML notation #DD4747.
  2. Drag the new color onto the selection.
  3. Go to Select > None to remove the selection.

Step 6: Duplicate and Flip the Layer

  1. Duplicate the layer by clicking the duplicate icon.
  2. Select the Flip Tool and ensure the direction is set to Horizontal.
  3. Left-click on the duplicated layer to flip it.

Step 7: Change the Color of the Flipped Layer

  1. To differentiate the layers, change the color of the flipped layer by going to Colors > Hue-Saturation.
  2. Adjust the color to your preference and press OK.

Step 8: Align and Delete Unnecessary Layers

  1. Use the Move Tool to position the layers. Hold the Ctrl key to keep the movement in a straight line.
  2. Delete the original image layer by clicking the X icon.

Step 9: Apply Composite Mode for Intersection

  1. Hide the bottom layer so only the two colored layers are visible.
  2. Right-click on the top layer and go to Composite Mode.
  3. From the options, select Intersection. This mode will display only the overlapping areas of the two layers.

Step 10: Final Adjustments and Export

  1. Show the background layer to check the overall look.
  2. If you need to adjust colors further, use Colors > Hue-Saturation.
  3. Once satisfied, right-click on the top visible layer and choose New from Visible to create a new layer from the intersection.
  4. Revert the composite mode to Auto or Union as needed.
